GrassRoots Growers Bursary

2019 Recipient

In 2019 the deserving student who received our bursary was Jonathan Cressman, a third year undergrad, studying Landscape Architecture, at the University of Guelph.

“My cousins live on a small farm up in Bruce County, where they produce a wide variety of things, in attempt to be as self sufficient as possible. I grew up going there, spending weeks at a time living and working on the farm, and that connection, I would say, is where my interest in food really started. My interest in organic farming, specifically, actually started here at Guelph. In first year I spent some time volunteering at GCUOF, and was pretty inspired by the operation there. I pursued my interest in organic growing this past summer, when I worked part time at an organic vegetable farm, which was a pretty eye opening and meaningful experience.

Being in Landscape Architecture, I am not planning to become an organic vegetable farmer. However, one of my interests that I am hoping to explore in Landscape Architecture is around food landscapes, and how food production can be integrated into landscapes where it currently is not.”
